sunrise and sunset in haleakala
Ask anyone what they think when you say “Pineapple”, and they will almost certainly say “Hawaiʻi”!
Pineapples have indeed for a long time been a symbol of Hawaiʻi but they are not native to the Hawaiian islands. Pineapples can be traced back to their origin in South America, and are linked together with Hawaiʻi because of the large pineapple industry that was build on Hawaiʻi in the early 1900s. For a while, Hawaiʻi supplied over 80% of the world’s output of canned pineapple!

Heleakala is Maui’s only active volcano and is a true gem. It is highly recommended to rent a car to do the tour by yourself.
The path is perfectly signposted and it is super safe to climb, as long as you do it with great caution since it has a few curves. From the town of Kula to the crater of the volcano it should take about 1 hour to reach the top.
There are things you should know before going up, so that you have a super evening up there and can enjoy the scenery:
- You can go both to see the sunrise and the sunset.
- Do not think that it is because you are in Maui that you will be safe from the cold. Try to wear warm clothes, because up there it is very cold and very windy.
- If you have the opportunity to take a thermos with a hot drink, do it, since once you are up there you will appreciate it! You can stop by The Island Fresh Café for some tasty delicous breakfast, lunch and brunch inspired in traditional hawaiian food for sunset or just a hot drink to beat the cold! We also have picnic box and lunch box!
When you start to climb Heleakala you can see how you pass the different layers of clouds and the weather may be somewhat changeable and you will get some rain. Until once in the crater you are already above the clouds and you feel like in heaven, it is a unique experience.
